چکیده

Abstract Conversion of perennial grasslands to crop land in U.S. Northern Plains has resulted a need evaluate alternative management strategies for cow-calf production. A 3-yr study was conducted compare beef cow/calf performance two different August-calving cow systems. Multiparous cows (n = 318) were allocated 8 replicates, and replicate randomly assigned drylot (DL) or pasture (PAST) treatments. From mid-gestation (March/April) until breeding (October), DL limit-fed meet requirements PAST grazed pasture. Feed resource during the 47-d period (November/December) varied by year treatment. However, pregnancy rates did not differ (P=0.72) between treatments within year. COW/CALF MANAGEMENT Minimizing Calving Difficulty in Beef Cattle

Calving difficulty (dystocia) contributes heavily to losses in production in beef cow/calf herds. The obvious losses are due to calves or cows that die at or soon after calving. Less noticeable losses are due to delayed rebreeding, more open females, an extended calving season and increased labor costs. While occasional dystocia is almost unavoidable, through proper management, cattlemen can mi...

Beef heifer development within three calving systems.

A 3-yr study was conducted to evaluate the effects of calving system, weaning age, and postweaning management on growth and reproduction in beef heifers. Heifer calves (n = 676) born in late winter (average birth date = February 7 +/- 9 d) or early spring (average birth date April 3 +/- 10 d) were weaned at 190 or 240 d of age, and heifers born in late spring (average birth date May 29 +/- 10 d...

Calving and calving management of beef cows and heifers on cow-calf operations in the United States.

A national sample of cow-calf producers was contacted to participate in a study to describe selected calving management practices on operations throughout the United States. Information was gathered on calving season, frequency of dystocia, frequency of observation, timing of assistance, and calving facilities. Regional and herd size differences existed in all parameters evaluated. Most calves ...

Milk production of fall-calving dairy cows during summer grazing of grass or grass-clover pasture.

Milk production of fall-calving dairy cows during subsequent summer grazing was evaluated in two consecutive years using a total of 80 mid- to late-lactation Holsteins. Cows calved during September and October and grazed from April to August in the following year. In yr 1, 27 cows grazed a native grass pasture and 13 cows grazed a native grass-clover mixed pasture containing 26% red clover and ...
